Discovering the Spectacular Gros and Petit Pitons of St. Lucia

St. Lucia is a beautiful Caribbean nation with pristine aquamarine waters. One of the island nation’s biggest tourist attraction is the Twin Pitons. They are visible from almost everywhere on St. Lucia’s landscape. The Pitons are located in Jalousie Bay in the town of Soufriere. These majestic peaks stand around 2,500 feet above sea level are have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005.

Gros Piton is the taller of the two rising to a height of 2,619 feet with the smaller Petit Piton at 2, 461 feet. If you stand at the top of the peaks on a clear day, you’ll be able to see the Caribbean islands of Dominica, Martinique, St. Vincent, and Barbados. The Pitons are considered the jewel of the country and beckon locals and tourists to climb to the top to experience the thrill of mountain climbing.

What to Consider Before Making the Hike

The twin Pitons beckon for you to climb them. But there are a few things to consider before strapping on your hiking boots. Petit Piton is the smaller of the two Pitons. While this seems like an easier decision, this Piton is also the steepest and not a good start for novice hikers, thus many choose the Gros Piton for their first tour. The hike itself takes around four hours total, which is up and down. There are different views and each one is spectacular. If you’ve done a tour before, feel free to ask your tour guide for a different route so you get a different view of the surroundings around you.

Best Time to Explore the Pitons

The best time to visit is mid-August through the end of October. The temperature rarely drops below 87 degrees and the weather is mostly bright and sunny.  November is the beginning of the rainy season and the climb will be a little more chaotic around this time for first-time climbers. Keep in mind that some tours book up quickly, so try to book your tour ahead of time to reserve your spot so you can experience the thrill of climbing the Pitons.
